Author’s Note
The figures are difficult to verify with certainty, but the official Xinhua News Agency has estimated that between 30,000 and 60,000 children are abducted each year—almost all of them boys. Police statements provide broader statistics on the crackdown on these crimes. Since the launch in April 2009 of a special campaign against human trafficking (which also involves women), more than 7,000 gangs and networks have reportedly been dismantled, and 18,518 children as well as 34,813 women are said to have been rescued. On the Chinese web, reactions are numerous. A Shanghai internet user claims that “child trafficking inflicts even more pain on parents than murder; criminals must therefore receive a harsher sentence.” Another, from Canton, writes: “Without a buyer, there is no trafficking—buyers must also be severely punished.” (Source: Le Figaro.fr)
“Yang Amazons”
The struggle of mothers fighting child traffickers in Shanghai. They call themselves the “Yang Amazons,” in tribute to the women of the Yang family, who fought to protect and defend their emperor during the Northern Song Dynasty. Since those heroic times, these Amazons have been celebrated as symbols of courage, strength, and bravery. Today, they face an enemy that is merciless—bloodthirsty, utterly without morality…
This is their fight.
This is their homeland.
These are their children.
The Yang Clan
More than a thousand years ago, the Northern Song Dynasty was constantly invaded, while a corrupt and apathetic court pushed the empire to the brink of collapse. Yet one loyal family found the courage and the valor to lead the battle and safeguard the dynasty.
From the 10th century onward, generation after generation, the Yang family risked everything to defend the Middle Kingdom. Their name became synonymous with unwavering loyalty, and their story was recorded in a body of tales known as The Generals of the Yang Clan (“Yang Jia Jiang”).
War exacted a heavy toll. As the invading forces closed in, the last of the Yang generals was killed. Who would defend the Middle Kingdom now?
That was the moment the Yang warrior women stepped into the light. With invaders at the gates and watchtowers in flames, China found itself without a single hero—until the heroines appeared.
Under the guidance of the matriarch She Taijun, Mu Guiying, accompanied by her loyal attendant Yang Paifeng, and all the Yang widows, took command of the Emperor’s army, defeated the Western Xia, and saved the dynasty.
